I don’t know about you guys, but Koreans are not fond of sweet things. They rather enjoy drinks like coffee, hot chocolate or cold drinks like smoothies and other similar stuff. That’s such a shame because Korea burst with delicious desserts. Hopefully, when you read this article, you will feel the vast “dessert” legacy owned by the Morning calm peninsula.

First on the list that the young generation especially cherishes during summer is called Patbingsoo or 팥빙수.
Indeed, Nowadays the Patbingsoo is a very popular dessert during summer, it is made of shaved ice combined with condensed milk, ice cream, small rice cake depending on the flavor you chose, and for the most traditional one, it has sweetened red bean inside. The shave ice grains are so thin that you could mistake it for real snow powder. Every year, aroma change depending on some chains!! Savoring every bite won’t be a problem here. The next one features a well-known species from the sea. Indeed, let me present you the Bungeoppang, a bread easy to find everywhere in Korea and on top of that really cheap!!! “Bungeo” stands for its crucian carp appearance and “Ppang” stands for the word bread in Korean. It is a really popular snack among Koreans as it is a crispy, hot fish shaped bread filled with red bean paste. To make it, it is quite easy, you just make the preparation, put it in the same iron machine used for waffle and you just add the red bean inside and it is done. A bungeoppang will never exceed KRW3,000. They usually sell it on the street, so do not worry you will easily find them!!

TTo continue with the red bean series, you have the Korean dessert called Chapssaltteok. This dessert consists of rice cake filled with sweet bean paste. It is a derived of Korean rice cake, as it can be made itself from pounded rice or glutinous rice pounded or not.

Hotteok or 호떡 is a popular street food and looks like a Korean pancake. Koreans usually eat it during the winter season. It is made from wheat flour, water, milk, sugar, and yeast. You can usually find them filled with brown sugar, honey, chopped peanuts, and cinnamon. It is also a street food snack and therefore really CHEAP. It is believed that initially it was introduced by Chinese immigrants’ merchants back in 19th century.

You can also find other desserts who originated from Korean history such as the one called Kkultarae or Korean court cake. It is a Korean dessert made with honey, maltose, and other various fillings. It is known to embody health, longevity and fortune to the one who consume it.

Last but not least, Yakgwa. Today it is more recognized as a Korean traditional dish, but formerly it was known as a dessert because of its sweet taste and its flower shape appearance. It is made from honey, sesame oil, and wheat flour.
