There are several mural villages in Seoul and all over Korea, but Ihwa Mural Village is one of the most popular! Situated on one of the sides of Mt. Naksan, this aging and silent village was able to avoid destruction thanks to its undesirable location, and in 2006 a campaign was launched by the government to rejuvenate the image of those kinds of small and old neighbourhoods. In this way, artists began the area’s transformation by covering the old houses or pavements with beautiful or quirky paintings and metal sculptures, giving a new life to the village. Now it is a popular touristic destination, providing surprises on every corner and fun photo zones for families and couples.
The most famous paintings are the angel wings on the wall or the koi fish on the concrete stairs, and new artworks are continuously appearing in the quaint narrow alleys and steep hills of Ihwa village.
Several restaurants, cafes, art centers and small museums were also opened.
How to get there: From Hyehwa Station (Line 4) Exit 2, walk along Daehangno for about 500m, turn left at Ihwajang-gil and walk up for another 400m. There are several ways to get there, just look for signs pointing to Naksan Park and the Mural Village and you will eventually find it.
