Arirang is a famous melancholic song that all Korean know. It was a real part of Korean’s culture, it had been classified as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2012.

Now, the Republic of Korea holds 15 intangible cultural heritages of humanity in total, including Pansori (Korean opera), Taekkyeon (traditional martial arts) and Jultagi (tightrope walking). That is to show the abundance of Korean culture. It also allows the world to learn more and more about this fabulous country.


Originally, Arirang was a Korean folk song reflecting the spirit and the culture of Korea. Arirang shows contrasts from a region to another, especially when it comes to rhythm but it always keep the soul and the feeling of it. It can be more sorrowful or joyful depending on the way it is sung and also the singer’s gesture.

Arirang is not necessarily a written song. It is a song which have been transmitted through generation with the contribution and participation of each artists. This song, no matter the region where it’s sung, is based on a simple melody that everyone can sing along to and even sing their own lyrics to express themselves.

A great virtue of Arirang is its respect for human creativity, freedom of expression and empathy. Arirang allows the artists to express themselves and sing there feelings to show their heart.

Arirang have been and still, is a great source of inspiration for Koreans as it is present in diverse art and media, including cinema, musicals, literature. This folk song have been a symbol which evolved through the centuries. It is a real symbol of unity for Korean all over the world. For example during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Arirang was Korea Anthem. That is to show how this song has crossed  the age and gather Korean people all around the world.
